Processing History
The processed portions of the James M. Goode collection were processed by Shanette Harris and staff in the Prints and Photographs Division in the 1980s. This finding aid contains unverified data from old container lists transcribed by Erin Ebert and Tori Cox in 2020. Not all of the groups of material are described at the same level of detail. Finding aid was encoded by Owen Ellis in 2020-2021.
Over a period of approximately five years, 1975-1979, James M. Goode, Curator of the Smithsonian Building, assembled the over 2,000 photoprints and 700 copy negatives which constitute LOT 11800. From this body of documentation he selected the several hundred illustrations for his book, Capital Losses (Washington: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1979).
From 1979 until 1982, Mr. Goode and several assistants cataloged these materials, producing cards identifying the subject, source, and reproduction rights for each photograph. Gifts of these materials were made to the Library of Congress in a yearly installments through 1982, when a Library employee organized LOT 11800, providing complete captions for each photograph, and citing all applicable negative numbers.
