Feinberg-Whitman Collection (LOT 12017)
Arrangement of the materials in LOT 12017 is based on the size and subject matter of the images. Portraits of Walt Whitman are in Boxes 1-3 and 8-22. Portraits of Whitman's friends and associates are arranged alphabetically in Boxes 5-6 and 22. Images depicting places associated with Whitman are in Boxes 4 and 22. Box 4 contains images of Whitman's birthplace, his carpenter shop, his residence on Mickle Street in Camden, New Jersey, and his gravesite. Box 22 contains three original prints. Box 7 contains textual printing plates.
Portraits of Walt Whitman in the Feinberg Collection are arranged in two sequences: those included in Saunders' catalog, Whitman Portraits, are arranged by Saunders number, and those not found in Saunders' catalog follow in chronological order in boxes 3 and 12. Likenesses in different media which are derived from a common portrait source are thus kept together by Saunders' numbering scheme, e.g., an original photograph by Cox (Saunders 95), and an etching by Johnson after the photograph (Saunders 95a). Large framed items are out of sequence due to special storage requirements.
