Scope and Content Note
The collection includes manuscripts, published materials, and images relating to Walt Whitman, collected by Charles E. Feinberg and others associated with the study of Whitman and his works. The majority of the collection includes pictorial materials, including photographs, prints, drawings, and paintings. Roughly two-thirds of the images are Whitman portraits, while the remaining third are photographs and prints of people and places associated with him. Other portions of the collection include printing plates used for Whitman related publications and a carte de visite album probably belonging to Whitman.
The collection includes multiple copies of many images, as well as images present in several media (e.g., negative, photoprint, and photogravure). Many images were once in Whitman's possession and are autographed and/or annotated by him.
