Biographical Note/Organizational Note
U.S. News & World Report (USN&WR) began publication of its magazine in 1948 while based in its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The collection contains the work of USN&WR staff photographers and photographers hired on assignment. The staff photographers were primarily responsible for assignments in the Washington, D.C., region, but also went on some special assignments outside the area. Foreign correspondents served as photographers when covering most international news topics and news topics in other parts of the country.
USN&WR reportedly had no staff photographers prior to 1952 but rather hired freelance photographers. Among the principal staff photographers were former Harris & Ewing staff photographers: Mary Dean (1950s), Warren K. Leffler (hired mid-1950s), and Thomas J. O'Halloran (hired 1952). Another principal staff photographer, Marion S. Trikosko, joined the staff in 1957. O'Halloran and Leffler both retired in 1985.
