Arrangement
The collection is organized into 118 groups (LOTs). Some materials have been incorporated into filing series for special formats, such as fine prints, drawings, Johnston's original negatives, etc.
LOTs are usually grouped by subject matter or physical format. In order to preserve evidence of Johnston's photographic techniques and working habits, unretouched and uncropped photoprints and proofs produced from the same negatives have, in many cases, been included in the same group of images. Johnston's notes, as well as identification supplied later by others, can be found on many of the photoprints.
