Scope and Content Note
The Frances Benjamin Johnston photograph collection (Library of Congress) consists of more than 25,000 visual materials, primarily photographs made by Johnston in the course of her studio and commission work. Also included are approximately 1,250 items that Johnston collected and donated to the Library of Congress (e.g., family photos, book and magazine posters, prints, drawings, and silhouettes.) The material spans the period 1864-1947; the bulk of the material was created between 1897 and 1927. Almost all of these pictures are available to researchers through subject groupings called LOTs. Some photos can also be found in the Biographical, Presidential, Geographical, and Subject browsing files in the reading room, and among unprocessed collections. Some items donated by Johnston are filed with the poster, drawing, fine print, and historical print series, and they can be located through Johnston's name in our Online Catalog.
