Scope and Content Note
Collection contains satirical cartoons on the Franco-Prussian War and political affairs and leadership in Europe during that time (1870-1871). Many different periodicals and series of cartoons are included such as Actualités, Flugblatt, Fleurs, Fruits & Legumes du Jour, Kriegsbilderbogen, La Charge, La Commune, La Ménagerie Impériale, Le Pilori, L'Eclipse, and Zündnadeln. Creators include: Faustin Betdeder, Draner, Paul Klenck, Patroity, E. Rosambeau, André Gil, Alfred Le Petit (and works under his pseudonym Zut), and others. Prominent leaders such as Napoleon III, Otto Von Bismarck, and Wilhelm I are depicted in the artwork along with soldiers and common people. Some prints are duplicate or nearly identical with different coloring, sizes, and condition.
