Scope and Content Note
Primarily, architectural drawings by Clarke Waggaman, George N. Ray, and their firm Waggaman & Ray. Among the more than 400 projects, the bulk are for Georgian Revival, Colonial Revival, Federal Revival, Neoclassical Revival, and other styles of residential, small-scale commercial buildings, and embassies located in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., especially on Connecticut Avenue and in the Dupont Circle and Kalorama Heights sections, and surrounding suburbs. The majority of the drawings were executed from 1909 to 1931. Building types represented include houses, row houses, apartment houses, stores, office buildings, banks, and automobile dealerships. Materials document various phases of the design process, from preliminary sketches to working drawings, and include correspondence and specifications relating to building projects. The archive also includes some architectural drawings, landscape architecture drawings, and engineering drawings by other creators.
Specific media or processes represented include graphite, ink, blueprint, stat, colored pencil, charcoal, watercolor, diazo print, vandyke print, and pastel.
Some ADE UNITs have additional materials to the drawings that are filed separately. If present, these series are noted at the end of the ADE UNIT's summary with the following options: specifications, photographs, and/or miscellaneous supplementary materials. These materials are not item inventoried but can be requested from a librarian while doing research in the Reading Room.
