Processing History
After acquiring the Wilhelm Schreiber Collection, Library staff arranged the prints for ready reference and study. This included mounting sets of related prints on large sheets and housing the collection into 12 boxes, which were numbered Portfolio I through Portfolio XII. In 2011, the collection was rehoused and inventoried with brief information for offsite storage. In 2021, the collection was more fully processed by Gillian Mahoney and Kristen Sosinski. Finding aid encoded by Kristen Sosinski in 2021.
This finding aid contains unverified data from old container lists. Not all of the groups of material are described at the same level of detail. The creator names, book titles, dates, and subjects are representative examples when the information was readily available. When comprehensive coverage for a specific printer or place is needed, Schreiber's inventory in longhand German script should be consulted and many portfolios may need to be examined. The spelling of engravers names can vary widely and different spellings should be tried in searches.
For the most part, illustrations from a single published work are filed together in folders and listed by subject in a card index in the collection case file. While imprint information is not noted on most folders, sources can often be determined by consulting the original inventory. (Source: Melville guide).
