Administrative Information
Provenance
In 1967, the collection was donated to the Library by the New York World Journal Tribune because it was closing. The formal donor name is 125 Barclay Street, Inc.
Processing History
Processing began in 1991 with a 'processing by request' method. In the first phase, Prints and Photographs Division staff retained the original collection organization of two series (Biographical and Subject/Geographic) and kept the original alphabetical arrangement of folder headings within each series. About 10 people took turns typing the estimated 350,000 folder headings into word processing documents. To retain the historical context, staff did not change the newspaper's choices for vocabulary and names, except to spell out a few abbreviations. The printed paper finding aid filled many 3-ring binders in the reading room. The second phase of processing is ongoing. When researchers request a folder, staff complete the labeling and rehousing work for those photographs.
This finding aid contains unverified data from old container lists based on the original folder titles. Finding aid encoded by Eric Peich in 2020-2021.
