In 1925 the Library received the John Boyd Thacher Collection consisting of rare examples of early printing, autographs of notable Europeans, and a sizable gathering of material on the French Revolution. To establish a memorial to her late husband, Mrs. John Boyd Thacher offered her late husband's collection of autographs. On January 25, 1925, she bequeathed to the Library this collection describing it as “all autograph letters, manuscripts, and documents written or subscribed by the Kings and Queens or other rulers of England, Germany, Spain, and Italy, including the Popes of Rome, and Rulers of France, including the Napoleonic collection.”
