Administrative Information
Provenance
The Janus Press Archive was purchased from Claire Van Vliet, proprietor of Janus Press, in September, 1991. The Janus Press Collection, consisting of the artist's books produced by the Janus Press, are purchased as they are published. The archive remains open, and additional materials are added as they are received.
Processing Information
As far as possible, the material retains the arrangement provided by Claire Van Vliet, who has supplied distinctive boxes for housing. Often Van Vliet has arranged and labelled folders (these have been retained); when she has not, folders have been added for organizational and listing purposes, and materials grouped according to type, for example, correspondence followed by typescripts and paste-ups, production materials, etc. In order to connect the material in the Janus Press Archive to the resulting publication housed in the Janus Press Collection, also housed in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, the LCCN for each work is noted in parentheses in this finding aid.
Preferred Citation
Researchers wishing to cite this collection should include the following information: Container number, Janus Press, Rare Book and Special Collections Division, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
Related Material
A related collection in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress is the King Lear Archive, which contains preparatory materials for an edition of Shakespeare's play published by Theodore Press in 1986, with illustrations printed at the Janus Press.
