The tale is about the twins, Ponnar and Shankar, the sons of a Kongu Vellalar couple, Nellian Kodan (or Kunru Udaiyaan) and his wife Thamarai. They became rulers of Ponni Valanadu in medieval Tamil Nadu, South India, and is credited with saving their people from an invasion. See AFC 2017/050: SR11-SR20.
