SERIES 3 |
Blue Series: Amerindian and
Inuit maps - accounts, extant artifacts, and lost artifacts, 1700-1916
|
|
Items: approximately 1175 |
|
Note on arrangement: This series is arranged
in the order established by G. Malcolm Lewis, chronologically by the date of
original publication of each map described in the research file. |
|
The Blue Series is arranged into 10 subseries: 3:i:
Originals:
accounts; 3:ii: Originals: extant and lost artifacts; 3:iii: Maps etc. of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition; 3:iv: Capt. W.E. Parry's
expedition; 3:v: Maps, etc. of Capt. Sir John Ross' expedition;
3:vi: Maps etc. of
Capt. J.C. Frémont; 3:vii: Maps etc. of Capt. 1st Rank M.D. Tebenkov's
Atlas; 3:viii: Maps etc. of Capt. F.L. Mclintock's expedition;
3:ix: Maps etc. of
H.Y. Hind's expedition to Labrador; 3:x: Map etc of J.B. Tyrrell geological
survey. The final two boxes of the Blue Series contain miscellaneous
items and items ultimately rejected from consideration from being included in
the research file. |
|
Note on attribution terms: The term Cartographer refers to any person(s) responsible for
creating a map in print or manuscript form. If a print or manuscript map is
copied from an original manuscript map, both the makers of the copied map and
original map will be assigned the term Cartographer. When a map is created using informal information, the
maker of the map will be assigned the term Cartographer, and the provider of information will be assigned the
term Creator. The term Account by refers to historical figures who made mention of a
possible or actual Native American map. |
|
Note on dates: The dates listed in this
finding aid represent the approximate creation dates of the subject
map/event. |
|
Note on titles: The titles in this series are
transcribed from the cartobibliographic summaries. Titles derived by the
Library are in brackets. |
|
Lewis' original order included a numbering system
for each bag file, called "Provisional Reference Numbers." Provisional
reference numbers for his bag files are included in this finding aid and can be
used in conjunction with the catalog files found at the end of each
series. |
|
Descriptive notes for folder entries in this finding
aid are transcribed from GML's cartobibliographies. |
|
The contents of this series are partially derived from the Red Series, and were
created after the Green Series according to G. Malcolm's Lewis' notes. In his
words, this Blue Series "was less thoroughly researched and the items were less
rigorously described than the [Green Series]." Pre-1771 items are primarily
"superseded and supplemented by the Green Series." Items from the post-1770
period are generally related to accounts of maps, mapmaking, and map use by
Indigenous communities. |

SERIES 4 |
Yellow series: Amerindian maps
and mapping -- examples on/from…
|
|
Items: 316 |
|
Note on arrangement: The Yellow Series is
divided into 4 subseries: 4:i: Examples on petroglyphs; 4:ii: Examples from
archaeoastronomy; 4:iii: Examples from cosmology; 4:iv: Examples on
artifacts, animal tissue. Each subseries is arranged within
approximate regional groupings. This is the original order established by G.
Malcolm Lewis. |
|
Note on titles: Titles in brackets were
devised by the Library. Titles in parentheses are devised by Lewis and
transcribed. Titles without square brackets or parentheses are transcribed from
orignial sources. |
|
Descriptive notes for folder entries in this finding
aid are transcribed from the cartobibliographies. |
|
The Yellow Series is devoted to "maps and supposed maps incorporated in
petroglyphs, in archaeoastronomics, in cosmologies, and artifacts" and their
associated research materials. Each folder generally contains manuscript notes,
correspondences, and photocopies of primary and secondary sources relating to
potential artifacts. This series features far fewer extant examples than the
preceding series, on account of the difficulty of finding artifacts in museum
collecctions, and because most examples were "with a few exceptions, at best
probably and often speculative" according to G. Malcolm Lewis. |

Charlton, February and March 1839. In(k)'d over their own marks by C.T.R.
