| The Control File is available on microfilm and contains records relating to
the functions of the Order Division. Records from successor Library units,
such as the Accessions Division, may also be included. The original records
were reformatted on microfilm in 1991 by the Library's Photoduplication
Service. With the exception of one record carton of correspondence, the bulk
of the records in this series were destroyed after microfilming. Copies of
the physical records may be interfiled with fiscal year documentation
throughout the collection. The Control File primarily consists of
transmittal letters to vendors that record information about the source,
such as bookseller name and address, date, price of materials, assigned
order numbers, and a description of items offered, approved, cancelled,
purchased, and received. Material types include microfilm. |

| The Correspondence Files constitute the bulk of the collection and primarily
contain correspondence with vendors relating to materials acquired for the
Library's collections as well as memoranda, invoices, orders, and subject
files. It also includes correspondence and memoranda between Library offices
as well as orders and subject files. Records from predecessor and successor
Library units, such as the Accessions Division, also are included. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, acquisition records such as bills and invoices, subject files, lists, photographs, photostats, printed matter such as catalogs and clippings, and general records such as balances, estimates, and annual and monthly reports. |

| The General Correspondence is the bulk of this series. It mainly includes
correspondence between the Order Division and vendors, book dealers,
publishers, libraries, international institutions, and other sources
regarding materials offered, approved, cancelled, purchased, and
received. Other materials include files designated as memoranda, orders,
subject files, and approval sheets. The memoranda consists of
correspondence internal to the Library of Congress, particularly between
specific divisions and the Order Division regarding acquisitions. The
orders are invoices for material purchased by the Library through the
Order Division. The subject files include letters to the Library
regarding offered materials organized by subject. The approval sheets
are reports on materials offered to the Library designated as accepted,
postponed, or rejected. Material types include correspondence, memoranda, orders, subject files, and approval sheets. |
