The Armed Services and Veterans Affairs series documents the activities of the Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Department and other programs aimed at assisting military personnel and their families. The series dates mostly from the 1970s and largely contains the files of department head Julius E. Williams, as well as those of Samuel D. Wright, and John J. Johnson. The majority of the series comprises case files documenting discrimination complaints by active-duty service members and challenges of veterans attempting to access benefits and health care. Additional topics include military recruitment, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programs, job fairs and vocational counseling, and the activities of individual branch Veterans Affairs Committees.
Material types include correspondence, case files, newsletters, reports, event programs, and printed matter.

The Branch Department series encompasses the work of the Branch Department, whose chief responsibility involved overseeing and guiding the organization’s many local branches across all fifty states and on military bases abroad. Aside from general administration, the Branch Department was also responsible for annual membership and life membership recruitment, prisoner membership through the Prison Program, and youth membership through its Youth and College Division.
Arranged into seven subseries.
BOX X:284-345 General Office File, 1949-2006
The General Office File spans 1949 to 2006 and consists primarily of the subject files of Gloster B. Current and William Penn, directors of the Branch Department during the majority of that period. Notable records include material related to the NAACP Image Awards, a branch officers study, the organizing of marches in Washington, D.C. and Boston, and the restructuring of multiple branches within major metropolitan areas, including Houston and Philadelphia. Items related to the fundraising efforts following the court ruling and subsequent appeal of Claiborne Hardware Company v. NAACP can be found within the Mississippi crisis file.
