The Financial File documents the finances of the NAACP, NAACP Special Contribution Fund, and Crisis magazine through annual budgets, audit reports, examinations of accounts, and balance sheets. The bulk of the series dates from 1960 to 1990 and is primarily composed of files from chief accountants, comptrollers, and controllers, including Richard W. McClain, Milton Turner, Harry Maragh, and Hinton King. The series documents contributions, grants, and fundraising efforts related to programs associated with the NAACP Special Contribution Fund, including the Emergency Relief Fund, Positive Program for Boston, and the Mississippi appeal of 1976 in the wake of the Claiborne Hardware Company v. NAACP decision. The finances of individual branches are represented mostly through year-end treasury reports, branch tax documents, and branch audits. Additional financial documentation is scattered throughout Part X, most notably in the Part X: Gilbert Jonas Company series and the NAACP Special Contribution Fund subseries within the Part X: Administrative File series.
Material types include budgets, financial statements, tax documents, reports, examinations of accounts, audits, correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, memoranda, and ledgers.
