The Mississippi Papers reflect the history of the civil rights movement in Mississippi primarily from 1963 to 1978, covering major civil rights events, issues, and topics, including the Jackson Movement and the death and legacy of Mississippi field director Medgar Wiley Evers. The series largely comprises the files of field directors Charles Evers, Emmett C. Burns, Alex Waites, and Robert Walker, as well as Mississippi State Conference president Aaron E. Henry. Some personal files relate to his political career as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives. In the 1990s, the NAACP's Henry Lee Moon Library received a project grant to process, catalog, and digitize this group of material, which they termed the "Mississippi Papers." Only a small amount of work was completed before the grant expired and the project was abandoned. As a result, the documents were received in a state of disarray with many removed from their original context. Attempts were made to restore this context, but there is significant crossover among the files. The digitization project also accounts for the individual code stickers on each document.
