The Prison Program subseries spans from the program’s inception in the early 1970s to 1994 and chronicles the establishment and functions of various NAACP branches in correctional facilities across the United States, especially east of the Mississippi River and in New York. Included are records of the program’s first two directors, Wilbur G. Smith and Leroy Mobley, and the records of the New York state coordinator, Charles S. Warren. These files primarily comprise program reports and correspondence, which largely document requests for assistance from inmates. Material related to specific prison branches can be found within the Geographical File subseries and also within the correspondence in this subseries.
