The Voter Education and Empowerment series documents the NAACP’s efforts to increase voter registration, inform potential voters, and encourage individuals to vote. Most of the material in this series dates from the late 1960s to the late 1980s when these aims fell under the purview of the Voter Education Department and its directors Clifford Collins and John J. Johnson. In the 1990s these initiatives were overseen by a separate project, the Voter Empowerment Program, which became part of the Program Department when the association restructured in the 1990s.
Material types include campaign files, news clippings, proposals, surveys, correspondence, manuals, reports, and printed matter. Videos, public service announcements, graphics, and radio advertisements are in digital formats.

The Washington Bureau series spans the years 1945-2008, with the bulk of the material concentrated between 1980 and 1998. As the association's representative in Washington, D.C., the bureau assumed responsibility for tracking and influencing federal legislation, monitoring government agencies administering federal regulations and programs, testifying before Congress, and working with other organizations with similar objectives. There is significant crossover among subjects and material types across both subseries.
Arranged into two subseries.
BOX X:2174-2266 Alphabetical File, 1954-2000
The core of the Alphabetical File subseries consists of subject files maintained by Washington Bureau staff on topics including armed services, civil rights, economic affairs, education, foreign affairs, health and welfare, housing, internal affairs, labor, public affairs, public relations, and youth welfare. The aforementioned file groupings were maintained as received. Additional alphabetical files that fell outside of this original filing system were incorporated under the heading "general file." As such, many topics appear in multiple files within the subseries.
Material types include reports, memoranda, correspondence, clippings, notes, and printed matter.
