BOX X:612-629 Membership Division, 1947-1995
The Membership Division subseries reflects the activities of the division from the 1960s to the 1990s through documents maintained by a range of staff, including Althea T. L. Simmons, Lucille Black, Muriel Outlaw, Isazetta A. Spikes, and Janice Washington. The subseries is not comprehensive but contains notable files such as individual branch membership records, reports, and membership campaign logbooks from 1947 to 1967 detailing membership totals and goals, including those of the Freedom Fund. Also included are many files documenting the planning and activities of the National Membership Committee Task Force (1977-1978), implemented to raise funds in response to the 1976 ruling of Claiborne Hardware Company v. NAACP.
Material types include correspondence, memoranda, reports, ledgers, flyers, brochures, handbooks, and commercial scripts.
Arranged alphabetically by subject, name of person, or type of material.

The Prison Program subseries spans from the program’s inception in the early 1970s to 1994 and chronicles the establishment and functions of various NAACP branches in correctional facilities across the United States, especially east of the Mississippi River and in New York. Included are records of the program’s first two directors, Wilbur G. Smith and Leroy Mobley, and the records of the New York state coordinator, Charles S. Warren. These files primarily comprise program reports and correspondence, which largely document requests for assistance from inmates. Material related to specific prison branches can be found within the Geographical File subseries and also within the correspondence in this subseries.
Material types include correspondence, news clippings, program reports, branch newsletters, and branch charters.
