| The Subject File series largely concerns Métraux's organizational affiliations. It
also documents the lives and professional careers of colleagues with whom she
collaborated, most notably Margaret Mead. The series includes correspondence,
memoranda, minutes, and reports from the American Museum of Natural History, the
Institute for Intercultural Studies, and various professional committees and
associations. A conference and meetings file, spanning the years 1951-1980,
comprises the bulk of the series. It features Métraux's notes from conference
sessions and committee meetings, which provide levels of detail often omitted from
official proceedings and minutes. The series also contains subject files relating
to Mead, anthropologist Ruth Benedict, and Métraux's husband, anthropologist
Alfred Métraux, and background material on projective testing methods developed by
Margaret Lowenfeld and used by Métraux in her research and fieldwork. Material types include: correspondence, reports, minutes, notes, programs, photographs, addresses, bibliographies, writings, and printed matter. |
