The Administrative File series documents the behind-the-scenes business and management work of the American Scholar office from 1970 to 2010, with the bulk of the material dating from 1998 to 2004 during the tenure of editor Anne Fadiman. Most of these records are printed email correspondence between staff members of the American Scholar as well as with staff of Phi Beta Kappa and contributing editors and authors. The majority of these records come from the desk of managing editor Jean Stipicevic. They document the organization of the American Scholar office; the business of printing, designing, and promoting the magazine; the management of the office's editing software; and the tracking of article submissions and production schedules. This series also contains files of unpublished "reader replies" from 1998 to 2004 and a run of accepted but unpublished manuscripts. Of note in this series are files reflecting the transition of editors from Joseph Epstein to Anne Fadiman in 1997, and files documenting the ousting of Fadiman as editor in 2004. Although the production files and author correspondence in Part IV document the magazine under editor Robert Wilson, his tenure is minimally reflected in this series.
