BOX 1-48 Personal File, 1937-2000
Material relating to Spira’s life and work. Spira’s writings and notes form a significant portion of this series and include essays, articles, and op-eds, most of which focus on topics relating to the animal welfare movement and the various campaigns in which Spira was involved. Earlier writings include many articles written under the pen name Henry Gitano for the Socialist Workers Party newspaper the Militant, and focused on human rights issues, the Civil Rights Movement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s abuse of power, and the Cuban Revolution. Additional writings include journals, a draft of Spira’s autobiography, and his 1996 self-published book "Strategies for Activists: From the Campaign files of Henry Spira." The series also includes many articles, essays, and clippings about Spira, and a manuscript of Peter Singer’s book, Ethics into Action: Henry Spira and the Animal Rights Movement. An extensive collection of notes dating from 1958 to 1998 details ideas, planning activities, and motivations of Spira, especially as they relate to his various animal welfare campaigns. Other large groupings of material include conferences and talks, education, Spira’s teaching career, and biographical information. This collection does not contain any files relating to Spira’s life in Europe before immigrating to Panama, and later, the United States.
Essays, articles, op-eds, notes, contacts, clippings, tributes, biographical sketches, transcripts, correspondence, reports, book proposals, awards, and manuscripts.
Arranged alphabetically by topic.
