BOX 1-4 Personal File, 1934-2014
The Personal File series, 1934-2014, mostly documents Yudain’s life outside of his career as the editor and publisher of Roll Call. This includes documentation of his childhood, education, family, wedding, retirement, and death. A short retrospective of Yudain’s life is documented in the book “Sid at 80,” prepared by Yudain’s wife Lael for his eightieth birthday and comprising photocopies of select clippings, photographs, and letters. A digital copy of this book is included in the collection, as is a digital video of Yudain’s memorial service at the National Press Club. The series also documents Yudain’s friendship with Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun, based largely on their shared interest in music.
Material types include correspondence, clippings, certificates, brochures, programs, photographs, obituaries, identification cards, passports, notes, invitations, and other printed matter. Digital materials include video files and a text file.

The Correspondence series, 1936-2012, documents Yudain’s activities through incoming and outgoing letters with friends, family, colleagues, and United States presidents, senators, and representatives. The correspondence is modest in volume and mostly features what Yudain identified as “letters of interest.” The earliest letters are mostly to and from family members and detail Yudain’s time in the United States Army and experiences as a journalist in Los Angeles, California. Later correspondence is mostly addressed to Yudain in his capacity as editor of Roll Call and features letters addressing publication matters and offering congratulations on Roll Call milestones. Correspondents include Silvio Conte, Robert J. Dole, Hubert H. Humphrey, Lyndon B. Johnson, Vincent Lopez, Richard M. Nixon, Ron Randell, Irving Wallace, and Bernie Yudain.
Material types include letters, invitations, greeting cards, memoranda, and attachments including clippings, photographs, and programs.

The Roll Call Files series, 1951-2011, documents various aspects of the newspaper’s history through items personally collected by Yudain. This mostly spans Roll Call’s origins in 1955 to the sale of the newspaper in 1986 to Arthur Levitt and includes brief narratives on Roll Call’s history. Files document facets of the newspaper such as advertising, subscriptions, and style guidelines. Subjects include Roll Call anniversaries, the Congressional baseball game, Congressional Staff Club, and the Quorum Club. Individuals featured in the series include caricature artist John Pert, humorist Mark Russell, and columnist Walter Winchell.

The Speeches and Writings series, 1946-2013, contains articles, editorials, and speeches written by Yudain, mostly pertaining to his role as editor of Roll Call and as a freelance journalist in Hollywood, California in the late 1940s. The articles mostly date from 1946 to 1950 when Yudain was an entertainment writer covering actors and films. In some cases complete copies of magazines such as Screen Guide and Movie Stars Parade featuring Yudain’s articles are present. The writings include a selection of Yudain's columns and editorials for Roll Call detailing social life on Capitol Hill, mostly from the 1980s. The series also contains song lyrics, usually parodies, written by Yudain as tributes to individuals or to mark special occasions. The speeches and remarks relate primarily to Roll Call and feature speaking engagements at award ceremonies, roasts, luncheons, and family events.
