| The Digital Files series consists chiefly of text files, with some video,
audio, and image files, created by Herman Wouk between 1980 and 2019. The
content includes drafts, revisions, work journals, scripts, diary entries,
correspondence, business files, memoranda, photographs, interviews, audio
books, and miscellaneous writings and ideas. Wouk began using a personal
computer for writing, business, and personal work as early as 1980. The
earliest writing projects represented in the digital files are scripts for
the miniseries War and Remembrance and chapter drafts for the novel The Hope. Wouk often used a system of saving all active files from a given
time to a single disk, then beginning a new disk after filling the previous
disk. These chronological disks, nos. 01-29, consist of drafts, work
journals, correspondence, memoranda, business files, miscellaneous ideas,
diaries, and other files. Access to diary files is restricted until 2039.
Diary files have been removed from digital ID sets in accordance with the
restriction. The Manuscript Division retains a complete copy of all files in
digital ID sets with diary files left in their original locations.
Researchers can access these digital ID sets only by permission of the
donor's designated representative. For names of removed files, researchers
can compare the original directory listing with the payload listing or see
Appendix: Restricted Digital
