BOX 36-67 African American History and Culture File, 1892-2019
The African American History and Culture series contains material largely related to DuPree’s activities and efforts to document and promote African American history in the Gainesville, Florida, area and southern United States. The series heavily documents DuPree’s work to preserve the stories, memories, and experiences of otherwise hidden members of the African American community in which she lived. Oral history interviews with survivors, tour itineraries, brochures, photographs, documentary films and video files, and clippings document DuPree’s work to establish Rosewood, Florida, as a Florida Heritage Landmark site in memory of the Rosewood massacre of 1923. Research files, including census, marriage, and deed records, project reports, photographs, and oral history interview transcripts, document DuPree’s work to chronicle the lives and contributions of enslaved people and laborers on the Dudley Farm in Newberry, Florida. Conference programs, interviews with conference panelists, photographs, video files, African American heritage tour programs, and itineraries relate to DuPree’s involvement in the UNESCO Transatlantic Slave Trade, Florida Center. Finally, oral history video and audio files as recorded by the University of Florida's Samuel Proctor Oral History Program document Black community members’ memories of the Civil Rights Movement, integration, and the inauguration of President Barack Obama. DuPree’s interest and research into gospel music also features prominently in this series. Sheet music, songbooks, audio files, writings and lectures prepared by DuPree, as well as material related to an exhibit she curated also are included. Finally, several files related to tourism of Black historic sites, cultural institutions, businesses, events, and festivals are included in this series and are organized by geographical location.
Material types include audio files, video files, brochures, photographs, printed matter, writings, lectures, songbooks, sheet music, hand fans, clippings, periodicals, and research material.
Arranged alphabetically by material type or topic. File structure of the digital content maintained as received.
