The Subject File subseries comprises files from a variety of Karle’s professional efforts, and include name files, travel files, grant files, and slides. Name files contain correspondence, draft publications, notes, clippings, photographs, and crystallographic data related to specific projects undertaken by Karle and the identified individual. Travel files largely consist of Defense Department memoranda that detail Karle’s attendance at conferences, meetings, award ceremonies, and lecture engagements. Grant files include applications, progress reports, and correspondence related to the National Institutes of Health-funded “X-Ray Diffraction Studies of Oligopeptides” project from 1981 to 2008. The subseries also contains referee comments and recommendations by Karle. Of particular interest are the recommendations Karle wrote for her daughters Louise Karle Hanson and Jean Karle Dean, both of whom pursued careers in the field of chemistry. The associated correspondence in these files contains some of the only references in the collection to Jerome and Isabella Karle’s family life. Slides, arranged by subject, likely relate to speeches, lectures, and presentations though are not identified as such.

The Research File subseries represents the bulk of the materials found in the Isabella Karle Papers and chiefly comprises Karle’s extensive x-ray crystallography research data, mostly from 1960 to 2006. Given the technical nature of her research the subseries is largely arranged as received with the original file names retained in order to preserve context. Molecular structures represented include Leu-enkephalin, valinomycin, lysozyme, antamanide, batrachotoxinin A, and synthetic analogs of antamanide, cycloamanide, hexapeptides, and depsipeptides. The Research File also includes publications, draft writings, correspondence, lecture notes, slides, and other materials related to the collected raw data. Project and funding reports related to Isabella’s research can be found in Jerome Karle’s NRL files within the Organizations and Institutions subseries.
Material types include crystallographic data printouts, photographs, negatives, slides, diffractograms, notes, correspondence, reports, memoranda, lectures, figures, illustrations, writings, and clippings. Some articles, crystallographic data, figures, and illustrations are in digital formats.
