| The Subject File comprises records created by, or in conjunction with, partner
agencies and organizations involved in the development of the memorial, as well as
reference materials on topics related to the Vietnam War. The series primarily
documents the process of acquiring governmental approval to erect the memorial on
the National Mall, as well as the collaboration with various governing bodies on
its design and construction. The majority of the series contains files from the
Commission of Fine Arts, the National Capital Memorial Commission, the National
Capital Planning Commission, the National Park Service, the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Foundation, and the United States Congress, and include typescripts of
hearings, statements and testimonies, draft legislation, correspondence, meeting
minutes, and notes. Other records include files pertaining to the veterans'
organizations that endorsed, or disapproved, the creation of the memorial,
newsclippings and correspondence, largely from veterans, expressing opposition to
the memorial, and clippings, publications, documentaries, television series, short
films, and news stories more generally related to the Vietnam War and the women
who served. Digital files comprise video footage of Diane Carlson Evans's speeches
to veterans' organizations, amateur and professional recordings of ceremonies at
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall), and video exposés and news stories about
the war. Material types include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, notes, certificates, awards, photographs, transcripts of statements and testimonies, draft pieces of legislation, event programs, publications, clippings, and press releases. Some news clips, interviews, and historical exposés are in digital format as video files. |
