BOX 1-4 General Correspondence, 1945-2012
The General Correspondence series consists of letters received from friends and colleagues in the scientific, military, governmental, and business arenas as well as copies of some letters sent. Although this series is relatively small, the correspondence spans more than fifty years, from Herzfeld’s time as a graduate student at the University of Chicago through to his final years of organizational activities and work as a consultant. Letters from the 1940s and 1950s include correspondence from a community of friends he made during his involvement in Catholic student organizations as well as information pertaining to his graduate studies Later material covers job searches, family and household matters, and some professional concerns. Also included are inquiries from journalists interested in speaking with him about aspects of his career.
Material types include letters, cards, and printed email.

BOX 4-149 Positions and Affiliations, 1943-2014
Positions and Affiliations, the largest series, comprises files relating to Herzfeld’s employment and professional activities – the places he worked as an employee or as a consultant, the numerous advisory boards on which he served, the think tanks where participated in studies and working groups, and other organizations where he was a member. Files pertaining to the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) include material on the Project Defender ballistic missile defense program he led and Project AGILE, a program supporting counterinsurgency warfare against communists in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. A grouping called Trips/Talks document Herzfeld’s travel and speaking engagements while at ARPA, including a number of trips to Southeast Asia. A grouping of photographs from his time at ARPA is located in the Miscellany series. While ARPA director, Herzfeld supervised the nascent development of the ARPANET computer network, considered the forerunner of the internet. ARPA files do not contain much on the ARPANET dating from the time of its development, but information written at a later date can be found in the history section of files on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and in the Subject File. (ARPA was renamed DARPA after Herzfeld left the agency.) His DARPA files primarily relate to work he undertook as a consultant to the agency in later years.
Material relating to Herzfeld's eighteen years at ITT is not comprehensive, but it does show the nature of his work as a manager of corporate research and technology programs at the global conglomerate. Files pertaining to Herzfeld’s tenure as Director of Defense Research and Technology detail defense technology plans and priorities of the George Bush administration and include a small amount of material from the Persian Gulf War. His work with the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, after his move to the Office of Science and Technology Policy as consultant to Science Advisor to the President D. Allan Bromley, is also covered.
Notes on meetings, outlines of presentations, reports, and project files are among the materials that document Herzfeld’s work as a technology advisor and consultant in the public and private sectors after he left government employment in 1992. Files pertaining to Herzfeld’s involvement with DARPA over the years document the advice and historical perspective he offered as a former agency director as well as his participation in a number of studies. Presentations, reports, histories, and videos highlight the technologies developed and the focus of study at DARPA. Herzfeld’s work with the Los Alamos National Laboratory and his participation in panels on global information infrastructure for the National Intelligence Council are also among the most extensive. Another feature of his consulting work represented is his contract work for technology companies. His participation in studies and working groups at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies during this period is also documented. Herzfeld served on advisory boards throughout his career. The most extensive files pertain to his decades-long membership on the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel and the Defense Science Board and include materials from meetings and his work on numerous task forces. Some of the earliest material in the series of a slightly different nature pertains to his involvement in the organization Young Christian Students while a graduate student at the University of Chicago.
Material types include correspondence, printed email, memoranda, notes, reports, printouts of presentation slides, lists, printed matter. Digital files include PowerPoint presentations and videos.
Arranged alphabetically by name of organization or activity with some subdivided by topic or type of material. Therein items are arranged chronologically or as grouped by Herzfeld.
