The Speeches and Writings series contains groupings covering sixty years of Herzfeld’s articles and scientific papers, speeches and remarks, book reviews, and Congressional testimony, as well as material relating to his memoir, A Life at Full Speed: A Journey of Struggle and Discovery. A number of Herzfeld’s earliest articles, published in Catholic periodicals, and his early talks to church groups focused on science and religion and how his life as a scientist fit with his religious faith. Articles and scientific papers stemming from his work at the National Bureau of Standards’ Heat Division in the 1950s feature such topics as temperature and his research on free radicals. During his time at the Advanced Research Projects Agency, he wrote and spoke on ballistic missile defense and also remarked on the ethical consideration in using scientific discoveries. From the 1990s onward Herzfeld’s remarks often focused on research and development issues, the uses and impact of information technology, and national security. Herzfeld spoke from notes and outlines, so there is often not a full text of his remarks, although some texts of speeches as delivered were created following his presentations. Correspondence, notes, and research material relating to a specific speaking engagement or writing project are sometimes included. Among the files pertaining to his memoir are transcripts of recorded interviews with Herzfeld used in compiling the book and drafts in physical and digital formats, as well as a recording of a book talk. Herzfeld’s testimony before congressional committees focused on defense and technology issues.

The Subject File contains scientific papers, articles, reports, and other material on topics that relate to Herzfeld’s professional activities, areas of interest, and scientific background. They cover scientific research, applied science, the administration of science, and discussions of philosophy and science. Many pertain to issues of defense, information technology, intelligence, and national security. Topics include ballistic missile defense, computing, information warfare, nuclear strategy, research and development management, and technology transfer. A small file on ARPANET contains a reminiscence by Robert W. Taylor, a major figure in its development. There is also a small file on Taylor. A "People" file contains information Herzfeld collected about fellow scientists, colleagues, and associates. An alphabetical section contains obituaries and other printed matter about scientists, military officers, government officials, and others Herzfeld knew in the course of his career. A chronological section contains attendance lists, membership lists, and other information grouped by year spans.
Material types include scientific reprints, articles, reports, press clippings, and conference materials, with some correspondence, memoranda, and notes. Digital files include information sheets and handbooks.
