The Correspondence series consists of Mallon’s correspondence dating from 1964 to 2023. Primarily personal in nature, the correspondence includes exchanges with his parents, Arthur Mallon and Carol Mallon, his sister, Loretta Mallon Harney, as well as long-time friends and colleagues. Some correspondence with Mallon’s partner, William Bodenschatz, is featured in the series, though more correspondence and ephemera can be found in the Personal File series. The series also includes Mallon’s letters from his romance with Thomas F. Curley III, who died in 1984 from an AIDS-related illness. Letters with other authors feature heavily in this series and cover both personal and professional topics. Literary correspondents include Andrea Barrett (restricted), James Ellroy, Christopher Hitchens, Mary McCarthy, John Updike, and Gore Vidal. Additional literary correspondents can be found in the alphabetical author files within this series. The series also includes some professional correspondence, particularly exchanges with his literary agents and letters related to his tenure at Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) as a columnist and editor. Additional professional correspondence is filed in the Professional File series and the Writings File series with the professional activity to which it is related.

The Diaries series consists of Mallon’s personal diaries from 1971 to 2022 with daily entries from 1976 until 2022. The diaries detail Mallon’s everyday life, along with thoughts on friends, romances, colleagues, workplaces, personal triumphs and failures, politics, and national events. Of particular interest are the diaries Mallon kept while living in New York City at the height of the AIDS crisis in the mid to late 1980s, with an emphasis on gay culture. His diaries also document the culture of academia while working at Vassar College, the magazine industry in the 1990s at Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ), and his time with the National Council for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Humanities.
Material types include bound diaries with a limited number of loose diary pages.
