The General Correspondence series primarily documents Oliver’s various professional endeavors related to the publication of poems in periodicals and with publishing houses, collaborations with other poets and writers, and her work with agents, editors, and managers from the 1960s through the 2000s. The series is arranged in two groupings: an alphabetical file and a chronological file. The alphabetical file (1962-2018) includes correspondence with Charlotte Sheedy, Oliver’s literary agent from 2010 onward, and with Steven Barclay, her booking agent, with whom she worked from 2005 onward. Also included in this grouping are files related to other poets, writers, colleagues at various universities, and several publishing houses. Fan mail, sent to Oliver via Beacon Press, and permission requests, handled by Molly Malone Cook, until 2004, and Bill Reichblum, Oliver’s literary executor beginning in 2005, are also included in the alphabetical file. Of note within the permission requests is a digital file of a fan's amateur audio recording of Oliver's work set to music. The chronological file (1962-2018) largely comprises publication-related correspondence and associated final drafts of poems for periodicals and newspapers, as well as other correspondence of a more professional nature.
Material types include correspondence and associated printed matter, poems, notes, and other attachments. Digital material comprises an audio file.
Arranged alphabetically by subject, name of correspondent, or type of material, and chronologically. The file structure of the digital content maintained as received.
