BOX 2-43, 51-54 | Programs, 1865-1915 | ||||||||||||
Warren's voluminous assemblage of programs forms the bulk of the collection. Most
programs document religious services and secular concerts held in churches in the
United States mid-Atlantic region, the Midwest, and California and similar venues
in Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Others represent concert and recital programs from
performances in significant venues in New York and abroad. A chronological series of church service bulletins outlines Warren's entire career as a church organist at Holy Trinity Church and Grace Church in New York and First Presbyterian Church in East Orange, New Jersey, from 1874 until his death in 1915. Many of these items are annotated, and taken as a whole, provide an in-depth record of Warren's church music activities Sunday by Sunday for 40 years. Especially interesting are the handwritten service notes containing hymn numbers for weekday services for which printed programs were not prepared. The collection also contains concert and recital programs from New York's major concert halls of the period. Noteworthy programs include those from: Carnegie Hall, featuring concerts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Manuscript Society of New York, the Musical Art Society of New York, the Russian Symphony Society, and recitals by Ignacy Paderewski; Chickering Hall, with programs featuring Hans von Bülow, Vladimir de Pachmann, the Mendelssohn Glee Club, and the New York Vocal Union; and the Metropolitan Opera House, with performances by the Philharmonic Society of New York and the Damrosch Opera Company. |
