Debut Records, 1951-1978

Debut Records was a label co-founded by Mingus, Celia Mingus, and Max Roach in
1952. Though the label closed only five years later, they recorded and produced
early albums by jazz musicians such as Hazel Scott, Hank Mobley, and Miles
Davis. The label’s most ambitious project was Jazz at
Massey Hall, a three-volume recording featuring "The Quintet" of
Mingus, Max Roach, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie, and a trio
made up of Mingus, Powell, and Roach. The Debut Records subseries is the most
extensive of the Business Papers series. It contains artists’ files, which
consist of headshots, correspondence, contracts, and publicity; correspondence
to and from Debut Records; contracts, licenses, and royalties statements;
expense records and receipts; fulfilled and unfulfilled record orders; and
travel documents that include receipts, itineraries, and contact lists. |
