BOX 5-6, 17 Printed Music, 1924-1975
This series consists of vocal and instrumental music that was printed between 1924 and 1975, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1931 to 1944. Duke Ellington composed the vast majority of these works, and notable items include sheet music for Ellington's vocal duet "Choo Choo (I Gotta Hurry Home)" (1924), "Mood Indigo" (1931), "Sophisticated Lady" (1933), and "Caravan" (1937). The series also contains a piano-vocal score for "I Got it Bad (And That Ain't Good)," which Ivie Anderson premiered in the 1941 revue Jump for Joy, and a 1961 piano solo version of Ellington's The Asphalt Jungle theme from the 1950 film noir by the same name. The piano solo version of Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge," printed in 1942, is also worth mentioning. Ted Grouya, Ted Koehler, Jimmy Johnson, Arthur Johnston, Jack Mason, Sam Coslow, and Frank Perkins are some additional composers and arrangers whose work is represented in this series, along with that of lyricists Johnny Burke, Mack David, Johnny Mercer, Irving Mills, and Mitchell Parish.
