This series consists of materials related to Ellington's performances and other professional engagements from the 1930s through the 1970s. Most events documented in this series took place between 1958 and 1972. Items include the press kit titled Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra, press releases, and record and sheet music catalogs. In addition, the series contains booklets from his band's international tours across Europe, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Russia, as well as tours within the United States.

This series consists of journal and magazine articles about Ellington's life, compositional style, performing engagements, and contributions to jazz. Articles date between 1933 and 1985, with the majority from 1961 and 1974, and were published in prominent sources such as ASCAP Today, Chicago Times Magazine, Down Beat, Ebony, and New York Times Magazine. While primarily in English, several articles are in French, German, and Japanese. Included are six articles that Duke Ellington wrote about his view of jazz and its future as a genre. Other notable authors represented include Joachin Berendt, Stanley Dance, Leonard Feather, Derek Jewell, Edward Morrow, Barry Ulanov, and Jerry Valburn. In addition, this series contains five tribute issues dedicated to Ellington: Jazz Magazine from 1943, Jazz Hot in 1950, Down Beat from 1952, Record Research from 1974, and Contemporary Keyboard in 1978.
