Stevens’s involvement in the Seattle real estate market began in 1953 when he
partnered with Alfred R. Glancy Jr., Ben Tobin, and H. Adams Ashforth to form
University Properties, Inc. The real estate firm managed the leases on a tract
of land owned by the University of Washington in the center of downtown
Seattle. Known as the Metropolitan Tract, it encompasses the Rainer Tower,
Puget Sound Plaza, IBM Building, and Union Square buildings one and two. In
1975, University Properties, Inc. rebranded and became UNICO Properties, Inc.
UNICO maintained the management of the University of Washington’s leases
throughout Stevens’s lifetime. This subseries holds business records and
correspondence between UNICO’s board of directors, presidents, and CEOs
including James M. Ryan, Donald Covey, and Dave Cortelyou. Other materials
include agreements, clippings, financial records, legal documents, meeting
minutes, operating summaries, photographs, project reports, and other operation
records. Also found in this subseries are materials documenting the management of additional properties in Seattle such as the World Trade Center Seattle, the Raja Tract, the Seneca Street project, and the remodeling and reopening of the Fifth Avenue Theater. Fifth Avenue Theater folders contain information on Stevens’s theatrical pursuits on the west coast. |
