Sam Norkin Caricatures, 1946-1997
|
|
This series consists of 85 original works drawn by caricaturist Sam Norkin
(1917–2011). Norkin was a New York-based illustrator whose drawings of
musicals, operas, and plays were published in Backstage, Variety, New York Herald Tribune, and the New York Daily News, among other prominent publications. The works collected by Stiga
date from 1946 to 1997 and span the majority of Norkin's career. A few of
the caricatures depict productions also found in the Design Renderings
series. |

Prints and Posters, 1821-1990
|
|
This series contains approximately 50 prints and posters which, unlike
the unique pieces in Design Renderings, were meant to be
reproduced and distributed to the public. These works span from early nineteenth
century prints from architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and lithographers
Johann Wenzel Zinke and Johann Christian Schoeller to Günther
Schneider-Siemssen's edition of scenic prints from Der Ring des Nibelungen (1972) and artist Robert Indiana's series for The Mother of Us All (1976). This series also holds several prints by Ernst Stern, a
frequent collaborator of German director Max Reinhardt. As with design
renderings, an underlined name indicates additional information may be found
in the Designer
Files. |

Stiga maintained informational files on many of the designers he
collected. The majority of these files are limited to a single article
or obituary notice, although others contain exhibition catalogs,
biographical pamphlets, or other ephemera specific to a designer's life
and work. Many of these materials are in languages other than English,
such as Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish,
Russian, and Ukrainian. Individuals with more substantive files include
Boris Anisfeld, Léon Baskt, Alexandre Benois, Eugene Berman, Edward
Gordon Craig, Donald Oenslager, and Günther Schneider-Siemssen. The
file on Irene Sharaff consists entirely of photocopies of designs held
in other collections. Designers whose names are underlined also have
renderings identified in this collection. |
