This series contains Schuller’s extensive library of scores and parts of music by other composers that he did not directly edit. Many, if not most, of the materials contain extensive annotations in Schuller’s hand. Some music here reflects his work as a conductor and performing member of the horn section in various orchestras. Other materials certainly were used in the course of his self-guided early education, and still others formed the basis for his later scholarly pursuits. Composers represented include classical "standards" such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, twentieth century composers in whom Schuller was particularly interested; including Charles Ives, Arnold Schoenberg, Alexander Scriabin, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky; and an extensive list of Schuller’s colleagues, contemporaries, and students who worked across stylistic lines. Among those in this latter category are Theodore Antoniou, Milton Babbitt, Ran Blake, Elliott Carter, David Diamond, Oliver Knussen, John Lewis, Primous Fountain, and Leifur Thórarinsson. Predictably, jazz and popular music is plentiful. Many works are original compositions, and others highlight the contribution of arrangers. Frequently, the notation "as performed by" will indicate the particular performer associated with a given arrangement. Composers include Charlie Barnet, Cab Calloway, Ray Coniff (transcribed by Andrew Homzy), Vernon Duke (with arrangements by Robert Graettinger), Duke Ellington (numerous arrangers including Andre Hodier and Chuck Israels), George Gershwin (arranged by Gil Evans), Graettinger (as composer), Scott Joplin, Charlie Parker, and Alec Wilder. Some materials are represented by holograph manuscripts, including those presented to Schuller as gifts, such as a work by Knussen; others are printed scores and parts, many inscribed to Schuller. | |||||||||||||
