This subseries contains Schuller’s holograph manuscripts for his own
compositions, original parts, ozalids (many prepared by him), and a range of
printed materials, from proof copies to published editions, many with
annotations. Materials span the course of Schuller’s creative life, from
boyhood to 2014, the year before his death, and show the full spectrum of his
composing styles. This series contains the score for his first publically
performed work, a piece for string quartet dated 1939, composed while he was a
student at the St. Thomas Choir School. Schuller’s father and three of the
elder musician’s colleagues from the New York Philharmonic presented the work
for an invited audience. Representing the other end of Schuller’s life are the
manuscript and printed score of Dreamscape (2012), commissioned by the Tanglewood Music Center; Four Chromatic Adventures and Four Chromatic Preludes (2014); and the holograph full score for Symphonic Triptych (2014), written for the Cincinnati Symphony, the orchestra Schuller
joined as a 17-year-old horn player. Well known for his embrace of jazz idioms,
this subseries also includes manuscripts of his "Third Stream" works, including
the ensemble piece Transformation (1957), represented by an incomplete holograph score and a complete,
annotated ozalid score; holograph full score and annotated ozalids and printed
score of Concertino (1959), for jazz quartet and orchestra; and Variants on Thelonius Monk (1960), for thirteen instruments, represented by the holograph score,
annotated ozalid score, and parts. Contained here are more than fifty sketch
notebooks and other sketch manuscripts Schuller maintained from the 1940s
through 2014. Earlier sketchbooks tend to contain transcriptions and
arrangements of other composers’ works, presumably providing a window into the
music that Schuller may have been studying at a given time. Scores are holographs unless otherwise noted. |
