This series documents Stucky’s multi-faceted composition career and accomplishments. There are two main file groups within the series. The first, Composers, contains Stucky’s extensive research on other composers as well as publisher pamphlets and programs from performances of their works. Stucky used this material in his pre-concert lectures for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic, as well as programming for the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group and Ensemble X. Although there are files on well-known composers such as Mozart and Sibelius, there are also materials about twentieth-century composers from America and abroad, including Louis Andriessen (the Netherlands), Harrison Birtwistle (Great Britain), and Liza Lim (Australia). This series also contains reviews, programs, and Stucky’s own analyses of some of his compositions that he used as lecture examples in music history and composition courses he taught at Cornell. These analyses, when viewed alongside their corresponding works in the Music series, provide insight into Stucky’s use of structure and compositional techniques and the evolution of his works throughout his career.
The Subject Files also contain information about Stucky’s endeavors outside of teaching. These include the Meet the Composer program, through which Stucky worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic prior to his appointment as composer-in-residence. The New York Philharmonic files contain Stucky’s contract and scripts for the Hear & Now pre-concert lecture series that he hosted from 2005 to 2009. Recordings exist of the musical examples he compiled for these lectures. A strong proponent of new music, Stucky founded the contemporary new music ensemble Ensemble X, comprised of music faculty from Cornell University and Ithaca College, in 1997. The programs, publicity, and recording notes from its two albums can be found in this series. Coursework from Stucky's undergraduate and graduate music classes, along with his concert reviews for the Ithaca College newspaper, comprise much of his writing from the 1960s and 1970s. His writing from the 1980s through the 2000s includes book reviews, journal articles, program notes, and articles about music for Baylor and Cornell’s newsletters. Please note that Stucky’s writings about composer Witold Lutosławski are in the Witold Lutosławski Materials series.
Stucky received numerous awards for his compositions, beginning in his youth. This series contains his National Federation of Music Clubs Youth Composition Award (1969), which he won at age twenty, and documentation of major awards such as the Pulitzer Prize (2005), ASCAP Deems Taylor Award (1981), and Guggenheim Fellowship (1986), among others. There is also correspondence, most of which is from other composers, including John Harbison, Libby Larsen, and Shulamit Ran, along with personal correspondence such as birthday cards and thank you notes from students and friends.
Digital files comprise photographs from Stucky's trip to Mexico in 1991.
The original, unredacted emails regarding The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts) are restricted until 2073.
