BOX 83-91, 501, 540, 582 MAPCASE FOLDER 1 | Subject Files, 1915-2004 | ||||||||||||
This series documents various festivals, concerts, exhibits, workshops, auctions,
other events, and publications related to George and Ira Gershwin. The materials
in these files include correspondence, photographs, press releases, programs,
invitations, reviews, agreements, clippings, financial papers, and essay drafts. A
substantial amount relates to the George Gershwin Festival at the University of
Miami School of Music; George Anthonisen's bronze sculpture of George Gershwin's
bust; the George Gershwin Commemorative Stamp, issued by the United States Postal
Service in 1973; and the opening of the Ira and Leonore S. Gershwin Theater at the
University of San Francisco in 1997. Correspondence related to Alan Schneider, who publicly claimed to be George Gershwin's illegitimate son in Confidential Magazine (1958), is significant. These materials meticulously document various legal issues that arose as well as Schneider's quest for membership in the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Correspondence related to a limited-edition publication of Lady in the Dark, which Gertrude Lawrence later refused to sign, is also notable. |
