BOX 204-214, 501, 540 Lawrence D. Stewart, 1917-2007
This series consists of materials created by Ira Gershwin's assistant in the 1950s and 1960s, Lawrence D. Stewart. Stewart also assisted the Gershwin Trust in compiling and annotating the photograph file binders in the early 1990s. Included are business files and writings by both Stewart and others, namely Ira.
Organized as three subseries.
Business Files, 1924-2005
This subseries consists of Stewart’s business files that he maintained in his role as Ira Gershwin’s assistant, and later as a Gershwin specialist who was consulted on numerous projects. Materials and subjects include correspondence, programs, invitations, clippings related to events, exhibitions, interviews, television and radio specials, and research projects. A significant amount of these items relate to two teaching workshops at Carnegie Hall and a Gershwin Exhibition at the City Museum of New York.
Also of note are numerous copyright registrations, dating between 1956 and 1964, for George and Ira Gershwin’s collaborative works. These materials complement legal documents related to a copyright suit to maintain protection for their joint works, and similar considerations under Danish copyright law. Other items include LP record sleeves and sheet music inscribed from Ira Gershwin and Harold Arlen to Stewart, personal notes from Ira to Stewart, and biographical notes that Stewart compiled.
Also included is a substantial amount of Stewart’s professional and personal correspondence with Ira and Leonore Gershwin, Emily Paley, Mabel Schirmer, English Strunsky, Mark Trent Goldberg, and various researchers.
Arranged alphabetically by subject.
