General, circa 1910-1990
Among the general materials, a small amount of correspondence, press releases, and newspaper clippings document Ira’s participation in the Committee for the First Amendment and highlight its role in countering the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Two especially significant items are Ira’s autograph draft of the statement that Humphrey Bogart delivered when 25 celebrities traveled from Hollywood to Washington, D.C., to protest HUAC in 1947, and the subpoena requiring Ira to appear before the Committee of Un-American Activities of the Senate of the State of California in 1948.
Other notable items include cropped portions of voided checks containing George Gershwin’s signature, which Ira then distributed among friends and colleagues. Two notebooks offer an invaluable glimpse into the reception, programming, and financial aspects of various productions of George and Ira’s stage works between 1918 and 1929. This series also includes address books, calendars and datebooks, passports, membership cards, and souvenirs from Ira’s travels to Moscow during the tour of Porgy and Bess in 1956.
Arranged alphabetically by subject.
