This series consists of autograph and typescript letters and telegrams between Ira and George Gershwin and others, both personal and professional. Correspondents include prominent lyricists and songwriters of the time, such as Milton Ager, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Neil Diamond, Howard Dietz, Sylvia Fine, Otto Harbach, Yip Harburg, Jerome Kern, Alan Jay Lerner, and Johnny Mercer. They also exchanged letters with composers Burton Lane, Richard Rodgers, Sigmund Romberg, Stephen Sondheim, Kay Swift, as well as Nadia Boulanger, Aaron Copland, Vernon Duke, Andre Kostelanetz, Ned Rorem, and Kurt Weill. Actors and entertainers in their network included Adele and Fred Astaire, John Bubbles, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly, Gertrude Lawrence, Lotte Lenya, Groucho Marx, Ethel Merman, Ginger Rogers, and Frank Sinatra. Letters with Louis Aborn, Max Dreyfus, Samuel Goldwyn, Alfred Knopf Jr., Gus Schirmer, Herman Starr, and Florenz Ziegfeld further reveal their involvement within the music, film, and publishing industries. The most extensive correspondence is that with the law office of Ira Gershwin's attorney, Leonard Saxe. This series also includes a sampling of Christmas cards and fan mail.
