This subseries consists of music for one to four instruments or voices. There
are works for piano, voice or instrument with piano accompaniment, instrumental
duets, and quartets. Tunes from operas and operettas continue to appear here,
as well as popular songs and marches. It is with the instrumental duets and
quartets that classical music makes an appearance in this collection. The
colorful scores for piano published by E. T. Paull are notable, as are the
first editions of marches by John Philip Sousa, a contemporary of Donch and
fellow alumnus of the U.S. Marine Band. The music in this series includes
family connections, such as juvenilia of Donch's son John, "The Lovers Song"
and "My Daddy March," and the voice and piano work by Donch's grandson Alvin
McNish Jr., "On the Chesapeake." Donch's brother William published one work in
the subseries, "O Won't You Be My Teddy Bear?" Publication information is
provided below if available on the music. |
