Music, 1861-1954
This series primarily contains arrangements and transcriptions for band, many of which were used by the Sousa Band. It does include original compositions, most notably those by John Philip Sousa, such as The Chariot Race, In Parlour and Street, Presidential Polonaise, and La Reine de la Mer Valses, as well as his arrangements "Thou Brilliant Bird," Cavatine from Queen of Sheba, Elsa's Dream from Lohengrin, Song to the Evening Star from Tannhäuser, and "The Voice of a Departing Soul," the first work performed by the Sousa Band. Other arrangers include Herbert L. Clarke, Giuseppe (Joseph) Boccavecchia, and J. B. Claus. Later compositions and arrangements, such as "American Maid," "Parade of the Tinker Toys," "United We Stand," and Csárdás, were created by Victor Grabel for use with his bands in Chicago and at Stetson University.
The materials consist of printed scores and parts for band unless otherwise noted. For many works there is not a full score present; often the conductor used the first clarinet or first cornet part.
This series contains works with demeaning titles.
