Music, 1849-1998
|
|
This series contains works composed, arranged, or transcribed by John Philip
Sousa, as well as works composed by others. The materials are primarily holograph
full scores for band and orchestra, piano, and chorus. There are also parts,
sketches, and libretti present. The works by others include gifts, tributes, and
pieces that composers hoped Sousa would perform, among others. |
|
Arranged in three subseries. |
|
Music by Sousa, 1870-1998
|
|
This subseries contains works composed by John Philip Sousa, including marches,
operettas, songs, dances, suites, incidental music, reveries, and humoresques.
The genres are indicated with parentheses after the titles except in cases
where the genre is part of the title. Where titles are known but not
necessarily written on the music, brackets are used to indicate the title. Most
works are represented by holograph full scores for band or orchestra, with some
scores for piano, sketches, and instrumental parts. If Sousa included the place
of composition as he signed and dated the work, that geographical information
is noted. |

Among My Souvenirs
(fantasy/humoresque), 1928 May 17
|
|
Holograph full score for band |
|
Note: The program for the 1928 Sousa Band
season tour gave the following program note for this work: The Nicholls song
"Among My Souvenirs" is lengthened into a sketch. Among his souvenirs is a
photograph, letters, and a broken heart, and, as he meditates, he goes back
before the broken hearted time and remembers when he and she were softly
sing "Twinkling Stars Are Laughing at You and Me," and then his mind reverts
to the time when he was "Seeing Her Home," recalling the songs of years gone
by at "Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party" - he was "Seeing Nellie Home," and then
he travels to the Far East, and visions of "The Road to Mandalay" come to
him - from that, he meditates on the "Sweet Mysteries of Life" and then
comes the closing picture that he is once more "Among His
Souvenirs." |

Artillery Company] (march), undated
|
|
Holograph full score for band (pages
9-13) |
|
Note: Close examination of this score and the
sketch reveal that Sousa may have decided to re-compose a portion of the
march. It is likely that he removed the unwanted leaves and inserted the new
material. The march uses the melody "Auld Lang Syne" in the trio
section. |

At the King's Court (suite), 1904 September 20
|
|
Holograph full score for band |
|
Note: Wooster, Ohio |
|
Note: The movements: The Countess; The Duchess;
and Her Majesty, the Queen. Sousa composed this suite during the period of
the Sousa Band tours of Europe, during which they played two command
performances for England's royal family. King Edward IV presented Sousa the
medal of the Victorian Order, the first American to receive it, which
inspired the work. The second movement contains material from an early Sousa
operetta, and the third contains materials from his early band work The
March of the Royal Trumpets. |
