Summary: Artistic photographs by approximately 50 photographers (primarily women), collected by Frances Benjamin Johnston. Some of the photographs were exhibited as the work of American women in photography at the Exposition universelle internationale de 1900 in Paris, France, and in Moscow. Includes character studies of adults, children, and mothers with children; people posed in historical-style costumes or enacting scenes; genre scenes; portraits; landscapes; book illustrations, and a photograph album of Old Deerfield, Mass. Pictorialist and other photographic styles are represented. Most photographs are on original mounts with many having a label affixed by Frances Benjamin Johnston.
Arranged alphabetically by photographer with some unidentified. Some of the photographs were moved from LOT 3222 to the PH filing series for photographs individually cataloged.
